Vienna wrote on her mailing list that tonight’s show would likely be her last of 2001. With that in mind, a bunch of us, including Eric, Randy, Bill, and Jeff went to the Global Village Cafe restaurant in Mountain View around 6:45 pm.

I had walked by the GVC numerous times in the past, but I never had dinner there. Jim and Preet Dullaghan, the owners of GVC, write on their web site (and on the back of the menu) that they used to work in the high-tech arena for 15 years until one day deciding to leave their jobs to travel around the world. Upon their return, they used their new-found knowledge to start the restaurant. Reading that story and speaking with Jim made me realize that there are plenty of people out there who have gone against the grain, against the flow, and found something worth doing. It’s inspiring!

Vienna played a great set of 26 songs in front of old friends and new fans. I don’t think that she took a single break during her performance — 26 songs straight! We must have been making her hungry, eating our wonderful pasta, flank steak, grilled salmon, and sea bass right in front of her!

There were a number of people from Vienna’s previous concerts who were also in attendance, including Dishi, Beverley, Yuji, and Jess, as well as a number of people that I haven’t seen in ages, like Nicole Sampson. Such a small world, connected in music through Vienna. We circle around her blazing star, held together by the wonderful gravity of her music.

Vienna’s Set

Listed below are the songs that Vienna performed tonight. I wasn’t familiar with a few of the songs that Vienna sang, but thanks to email, I was able to get them from Vienna this morning. Many of the songs were from her current album, Waking Hour, but there were several covers mixed in with new and old songs.

  1. Say Uncle
  2. Daughter
  3. Gravity
  4. The Tower
  5. Enough To Go By
  6. Cold Kind of July [new]
  7. Shasta [new]
  8. Between
  9. Boy At the Piano [old]
  10. Waking Hour
  11. Unwritten Letter #1
  12. My Medea [new]
  13. Homecoming [new]
  14. Eric’s Song
  15. Do What You Have To Do (Sarah McLachlan)
  16. I Need You To Turn To (Elton John)
  17. Train Wreck (Glen Phillips)
  18. Baker Baker (Tori Amos)
  19. Drought
  20. Rain In England [new]
  21. it’s me. but you wouldn’t know that. [old]
  22. Momentum
  23. Signal Fire [old]
  24. Undone [new]
  25. Anna Rose [old]
  26. Lullabye For A Stormy Night

I filmed her performance, but the audio wasn’t all that great. The next time she performs and I film, I’m going to have to hook my videocamera up directly to her audio equipment. That would be awesome to get a crystal clear recording from Vienna. We’ll give it a shot in 2002!

Hello, I know this page probably hasn’t been touched for four years or so, but I found it on Google and thought I’d take a chance. I’m a huge Vienna Teng fan, and I wanted to know if you still have the live audio recordings you made of some of these hard-to-find songs. I would love to hear some of them, namely the Sarah McLachlan cover, Signal Fire, Cold Kind of July, and It’s Me But You Wouldn’t Know That. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Laura
