New Hairstyle

I heard on the radio yesterday that diPietro Todd Salon is having a promotion with Locks of Love and the makers of Rogaine where if you donate at least 10 inches of hair, you’ll get a free salon-style hair cut. Since the wedding is coming up, I can’t pass up on this opportunity!

I had first heard about Locks of Love a few months back while looking for sites where I could donate or sell my hair. The company is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children 18 years and younger suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

Readers, I need your help in deciding a new hairstyle!

I’ll still have enough hair to style in a new way even after donating ten inches. As you can see in my musings on hair, I have had short hair, no hair, long hair, and even cornrows! I didn’t start experimenting with my hair until college, whereupon I shed my short hair in favor of more longish locks. Junior year, I shaved my head for the first time in Synergy of all places. After growing it out for a little while, I shaved it again sometime in 1999 and again in 2000. Since 2001, however, it’s been long, and today, it’s really long!

I used to be enamoured by Tom Cruise’s long yet short hairstyle in Mission: Impossible 2. I tried getting that hairstyle once, but it didn’t go all that well. Lately, I’ve been liking the long yet short look of the nefarious Dr. Gaius Baltar on the new Battlestar Galactica. You can see in the photos below what I’m thinking about.

What do you think of them? If you have alternative hairstyles that I should think about, post up the links using the comments below! I don’t want to get short hair on Saturday… after all, if I don’t like it, I’m stuck with it for the wedding. Better to keep it still a bit long to keep my options open come June.

Check out my hairstyles from the past.

IMHO, it all boils down to how you want to market yourself to the society. For example, I sell myself straight forward as a no-nonsense sub-marine-skipper type Engineer. So I end up wearing short hair, jar-head or flat-top to be precise.

Your case is a bit tricky. You can sell yourself as an artist(long hair), a techie(shorter hair), or sophisticated(long but short like that of Cruise)….!

Boy! Guys like us with hair have a whole lot to think about — options, options! Baldies’ lives are much simpler except they go to the Barber shop more often than we do. Thinking about that…you can also join the Klan, sorry I mean shave it bald!

Btw, whose wedding are you talkin about? Yours? (Forgive my ignorance.)

    Yeah, my wedding :)

I’ve done the shaved head look for a few years, and I’m not interested in going back there at this moment.

Cornrows for the wedding!! ;) I’m partial to a shaved head look in a lot of cases (I think you look particularly good with a shaved noggin), but I also like the super low maintenance of it. In any case, I can’t say that i’ve seen any guy with long hair that i’ve ever preferred over shorter hair. I am not at all a big fan of the classic “tech guy look”. *shiver*

Errm… I dunno. Goto a good salon and let them do what they want and see if you like it :) The difference between a salon and a mow & go in my opinion is artistry. The salon actually works WITH you to figure out what a good look for you would be – the chop shop just cuts the hair w/o regard to whether it “works” for you or not. When I had hair, I finally broke down and went to Robert Cromeans and got the best haircut of my life there. Ended up paying about 2x as much, but it was worth it compared to the craptastic cuts that Craptastic Sams has been giving me all my life.

Wow. Who knew I had so much to say about hair styles?

Ah, the self-inspection before the wedding. Interesting. It is true that the wedding will carry a lot of weight with how you look at yourself in years ahead. Your wedding photos! Pretty heavy huh? I think you’re on the right track with the long but short look of Cruise…just to be safe. :)

Wait! Before you cut it, I think you should make a Quicktime movie with only two images — this photo and the previous post’s photo — alternating back and forth at gradually descending frame rates over the course of 10-15 minutes. You know, start out with happy-RAID-Adam for a full 30 frames, then angry-hair-Adam for 28 frames, then back to happy-RAID-Adam for 25 frames, etc… Gradually quicken the pace until you get down to a single frame each for each shot by the time the movie ends.

That would drive someone really, really insane. :)

based on looking at your picture, i think Dr. Gaius Baltar’s hairstyle will fit.

is your wedding this coming Saturday?

WAIT! Don’t cut it at all! I think the long hair looks awesome on you. It takes so long to grow back. Are you REALLY sure you want to do this?

  8. Adam Tow Avatar

    Jason:

It’s got to get a shorter for the wedding in a couple of months. Don’t worry, I can always grow it back. I don’t want to look like a wild man for my wedding! :)

Adam, about your wedding…have you thought about where you’re going to take pictures? Studio or outside kind of thing? I got some taken in Taipei last summer and we did about 6 different sets ranging from casual to formal to the beach. See: brightonopolis.com/pro/pro.html

You know, it’s perfectly ok to have long hair for a wedding. Mine was shoulder-length. Our wedding was Gothic-themed, with black and burgundy our primary colors. My hair looked really nice draped over the shoulders of my black velvet tail coat and ivory poet shirt.

Have you considered wearing a ponytail?

It’s more for the relatives than for me, to be honest. Like I said before, I can always grow it back after the wedding.

It doesn’t look to me like very much of it is long enough to donate. Are you sure you want to do this? You know, they only make a hundred or so wigs from the one to two hundred thousand donations they get each year. Most of the rest of the hair is either sold to be made into extensions or discarded as unusable.

Check out haircutsformen.org for hairstyles. You would want the “very long” styles which aren’t actually that long

I have Trish cut my hair once a month at that salon for $15. I love Trish and that salon used to promote a photographer’s work in there. Too bad the gallery was only up for a month.

I have the perfect solutiono for you Adam, at this website http://www.hairstylezone.com there is a program available where you can actually upload a photo of your face and then try on over 3000 different hairstyles (mens hairstyles included). There are celebrity hairstyles, mens, womens, loads, even dreadlock and alternative hairstyles. It is actually pretty accurate and you can change color and things as well as style. There is a demo at there where you can browse (and some free galleries to browse too, one a mens gallery) the actual virtual hairstyler only costs $14.99, but like I said there is a demo version.

Once you upload your photo you can move it and size it so that the hairstyles fit perfectly. It really is good to check before you do some drastic cut that you cant change. I was surprised when I uploaded my photo what a difference to what i looked like was made by changing hairstyles. I am now very beautiful (hahaha) thanks to this great use of modern hairstyling technology. You already are, but perfection can always be improved on ;)

Finding the right hairstyle for that special occasion can be a big chore. No matter whether it is your wedding day or a formal work party, looking your best is always your top priority and you pay just as much attention to your hair as you do your dress. But The wedding day is some…
